How to use new topsoil to revive a lawn
Topsoil is a dark and loamy soil that is often used for top dressing lawns. This helps to level out the surface and ensure there are plenty of nutrients. To get the best out of your topsoil, you will need to use it in the correct manner.
Use a fertiliser
The first thing to remember is to fertilise your lawn a couple of weeks before you add the top dressing. The reason for this is to allow nutrients to soak down under the grass. It can then feed the grass from below and promote growth while the topsoil is being applied.
Mow the lawn
You should also mow your lawn the day before you apply the topsoil. Don't overdo it — if you cut it too short, it will take time for it to grow back and you will have empty patches in your lawn in the meantime. Instead, you should cut it down to your desired length. There will then be room for the topsoil to fall through the grass instead of covering it.
Use a good topsoil
You should use a good quality topsoil for dressing your lawn. Good topsoils will contain plenty of organic matter that will help to produce lush and healthy grass. You should also find a topsoil that is free of seeds. The best types consist of fine grains that will not clump together but will instead drop down between the blades to feed the soil itself.
Apply the topsoil
The best way to top dress a lawn is to add small amounts throughout the garden, and then rake it in. You can use a wheelbarrow to move it around. Try not to cover the grass itself as it may be unable to grow. Instead, rake it through so that the topsoil is sitting on top of the existing soil and the grass is visible through it.
Water the lawn
You should then water the entire lawn. As well as providing the moisture that the grass needs to grow, you will be helping the topsoil to settle down between the blades. You should try to avoid walking on the grass for a few days after this to give the lawn the best chance to start growing again.
Using topsoil to dress a lawn is the best way to give it a new lease of life and ensure it has the correct nutrients to keep growing. Your supplier will be happy to give more advice on how to use it.
